The firmware adds a grid display mode (which cannot be used in MF mode and movie mode) for picture taking is added to the LCD monitor. Sigma US has announced a scholarship contest for high school students seeking higher education in a photo-related field. The winner will receive a $5,000 cash gift and $1,000 in Sigma products. To enter, US high school seniors graduating in 2010 are required to submit an 800-word essay and three to five images with a connected theme. The contest will run until February 15, 2010 with the winner announced in May.

Sigma US has revamped its website with new interactive features. It now includes a Lens Finder section that is aimed at guiding users to select the right lens according to their camera system, price and skill level. Other features include a photo share gallery, blog and social media tools.

Nikon has announced version 1.5.0 of its ViewNX image viewing and editing software. The new version resolves minor issues and extends support to the recently released D3S digital SLR. It also enables location tagging via GPS logs from third-party receivers (including cellular phones) and supports Epson's E-Photo printing plug-in. Furthermore the software can also now run on Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. Nikon has also updated its Transfer software to version 1.5.1.

Japanese software developer Ichikawa Soft Laboratory has announced a 'release candidate' version of its Silkypix Developer Studio Pro raw converter that supports Sigma's SD14, DP1 and DP2 digital cameras. The new version also extends raw suppport to most cameras including the Nikon D300S and Canon EOS 5D Mark II, and offers features such lens aberration controllers, noise reduction, color accuracy and batch processing. The Sigma RC will be available as a free download until November 30, 2009.
