Bing Travel knocked out in Seattle data center fire

A fire in Seattle has severed the power supply to a group of servers, which included Microsoft's Bing Travel section, according to a report by Tech Flash. Not only was that part of Bing knocked out, but also Authorize.net and various other sites, as a transformer was blown at the Fisher Plaza data center, where the servers were running.  read more »

JOBO introduces Curve Line digital picture frames

JOBO announces two new digital picture frames - the Curve 7 and Curve 8. This new line of digital picture frames features rounded edges, a stylish design available in either a black or white varnish finish on the frame. The Curve 7 features an almost 7-inch color TFT LCD display with a resolution of 480 x 234 pixels and various aspect ratios incl. 4:3, 16:10 and zoom mode. Sigma updates Photo Pro software

Sigma has released an update to its Photo Pro image-editing software. Version 3.5.2 for Windows and v3.3 for Mac claim to improve processing of highlight areas in RAW images and now offer the 'ProPhoto RGB' color space. Exposure warning is also displayed for RGB channels in the histogram in the Windows version.

Hasselblad unveils CFV-39 digital back

Hasselblad has announced the CFV-39 digital back to be used in conjunction with its V series of camera bodies. Featuring a 39 megapixel sensor, it offers two capture formats: 4:3 and square (at 29MP). It allows tethered shooting and offers a capture rate of 0.7fps. The bundled image processing software features digital lens correction for Carl Zeiss lenses that corrects distortion, lateral chromatic aberration and vignetting.

Despite New Owner, id Still Lives Or Dies By Their Engines

The Guardian has an article about id Software's status after being purchased by ZeniMax (Bethesda's parent company) not long ago. While id gained considerable financial stability out of the deal, it's clear that what Bethesda has to gain is access to top-of-the-line engine technology, which they've often needed to license. id's Todd Hollenshead said, "The videogames business is defined by technology, which is why guys like JC [John Carmack] are still so significant. Consumers may not be as in touch with the intricacies as they used to be, but you can still make significant, impactful change.  read more »

Massive Bank Fraud In EVE Online

djconrad was one of several readers to point out the latest major scandal in EVE Online, the space MMO notable for its large, player-driven economy and the entertaining stories it often generates. A player named Ricdic, chairman of a large in-game bank, decided to embezzle roughly 200 billion ISK (the game's currency). Ricdic exchanged the ISK for about $5,000 to pay off real-life debts. In the CrackBerry forums it has been noted recently that there has been some very keen interest from people wanting to have a look at picking up the BlackBerry Tour from Verizon.

Raised taxes of 14-percent on mobile phones squashed by EU

There has been recent legislation in the EU which could have seen mobile phones reclassified as “multi functional devices” and would have raised taxes by a staggering 14%, the delightful news is that this was only proposed and this has not happened.
Mobiles being shipped with TV receivers would have also received an increase of 14%, and the cost of a mobile containing GPS would have had its cost price increased by around 3%.  read more »

'Jumping Gene' Diminishes The Effect Of New Type 2 Diabetes Risk Gene

Research has identified a new gene associated with diabetes, together with a mechanism that makes obese mice less susceptible to diabetes. A genomic fragment that occurs naturally in some mouse strains diminishes the activity of the risk gene Zfp69. The researchers also found that the corresponding human gene (ZNF642) is especially active in overweight individuals with diabetes.
